The 2017 Edition of the Kenya Internet Governance Forum (KIGF), Laico Regency Hotel, Nairobi, Thursday, 6 July 2017

Theme: Internet and Elections: Shaping Our Digital Future

Overview of the Kenya IGF 2017

The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is a multi-stakeholder forum for policy dialogue on issues of Internet governance. The forum is held in an informal setting, free from binding negotiations. It brings together all stakeholders from government, private sector, technical community, academia and civil society to discuss Internet governance issues on an equal basis footing through an open and inclusive process.

The theme for this year’s Global IGF is “Shape your Digital Future!” while the theme for the Kenyan IGF is “Internet and Elections: Shaping our Digital Future”. This is an important issue for the country in light of the upcoming August general election, and the fact that technology will be deployed at a level that has not happened in the previous general elections. In addition, the internet has emerged as a critical avenue for expression and at the same time, cyber security threats have risen coupled with the emerging pattern in the region where governments have shut down the internet during political events. Over and above this, it is important to take stock of what lays ahead for the future of internet governance in the country.
